Explore Martha’s Vineyard Responsibly

Resources Menu

Martha’s Vineyard’s beauty depends on the care of all who visit. The Island’s beaches, trails, and ponds are fragile environments that benefit from mindful use and respect for the land, wildlife, and community.

Respect the Land

Every path, field, and shoreline holds meaning — and is part of a functioning ecosystem.

Stay on established trails and public ways to prevent erosion and protect rare habitats such as coastal heathlands and sandplain grasslands. Whether walking a woodland trail or exploring a beach, tread lightly and leave what you find.

Protect the Water

The Island’s ponds, streams, and surrounding ocean are all connected — and easily affected by the choices visitors make each day. Even small actions can help keep Vineyard waters clean and safe for swimming, shellfishing, and wildlife.

  • Use reef-safe sunscreen to prevent chemical runoff that can harm marine life and shellfish beds.
  • Carry a reusable bottle and refill it at one of the Island’s many Tap Map stations instead of buying single-use plastic water bottles.
  • Dispose of trash and recycling properly, especially at the beach — wind and tide carry litter quickly into ponds and the ocean.
  • When renting a home or staying near a pond, avoid using harsh cleaning products or detergents that may drain into groundwater.
