After a full walk last summer, this favorite returns to explore the remarkable ecology and history of Tisbury Great Pond. Generations of West Tisbury residents have treasured its wild oysters—not only as a local food source but as essential ecosystem engineers that help keep our waters healthy. This collaborative walk highlights West Tisbury & Chilmark’s shared municipal oyster farm, the Martha’s Vineyard Shellfish Group’s shellfish restoration efforts, and VCS’s long history of protecting the Island’s great ponds while enjoying one of the Vineyard’s most beautiful coastal landscapes.
